In this episode, Dr. Joseph Betancourt reflects on how early beginnings with his family upbringing influenced his journey to medicine and his outlook on how he approaches his work and opportunities. He also talks about the work he has done around diversity, equity and inclusion, in particular, how to think about and deliver cross cultural competency and communication to improve patient care. Dr. Betancourt provides advice for future leaders about learning through engagement when exploring a passion and moving forward with humility and confidence.

Joseph Betancourt, MD, MPH is the Vice President and Chief Equity and Inclusion Officer of Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and the founder and senior advisor and faculty of the Disparities Solutions Center at MGH. Dr. Betancourt is nationally and internationally recognized expert in health policy, health care disparities, diversity, cross cultural medicine, and has served on several institute of medicine and national academy committees, including the one that many of us in the field will see as a landmark report on equal treatment as well as increasing diversity in the healthcare workforce.
